How to measure the right swimming trunk size? A simple measurement guide for men

Online shopping is convenient until the trousers arrive and are the wrong size. Swimwear sizes vary between brands, which can surprise even an experienced shopper. In this guide, we'll tell you what to measure, how to do it correctly, and how to interpret the Saimaa Sealskin size chart.

Two minutes and a tape measure. That's all you need.

What measurements do you need?

1. Waistline: The waist is the most important measurement. Measure it at the point where the swimwear's drawstring would be. Keep the tape measure level around your body, not too tight but not loose.

If you are borderline, choose the larger size.

How to measure correctly: step by step

  1. Use a flexible tape measure, not a construction tape.

  2. Measure in just underwear or without, not over jeans.

  3. Record both measurements in centimeters.

  4. Compare the numbers to the Saimaa Sealskin size chart.

  5. If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the larger one. Swimwear should fit snugly, but not be too tight.

Why do sizes vary between brands?

Short answer: because there is no obligation to follow the same standard.

European sizes, Italian sizes, and so-called S/M/L sizes are based on different pattern measurements. In addition, the fabric matters: flexible recycled material can behave differently from traditional nylon. Saimaa Sealskin models are patterned from Italian recycled fabric that stretches in all directions but returns to its shape. This means that the pants can be snug without feeling uncomfortable.

If you have previously bought a German or Scandinavian brand, for example, always check our own size chart before ordering.
